ZIM: the heart of Soviet watchmaking and heavy industry

Founded in 1909 in Samara, the Maslennikov Factory (ZIM, Завод имени Масленникова) played a pivotal role in Soviet industry, transitioning from ammunition production during World War II to manufacturing consumer goods, including watches, household appliances, and automotive components.

In 1950, ZIM began producing the 2602 calibre, used in Pobeda watches, which became the longest-running movement in Soviet history, with over five decades of continuous production. By the 1980s, the factory employed up to 35,000 workers, and its watches were exported worldwide.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, ZIM faced a severe financial crisis and ultimately ceased operations in 2006. Today, while much of the factory lies in ruins, the ZIM brand remains an icon of Soviet watchmaking, valued by collectors for its mechanical reliability and simplicity.
